Pastor Tyshawn Gardner is the Pastor of the Plum Grove Baptist Church in Tuscaloosa and the founder and CEO of the Citizen Impacting Community Association and the West Side Scholars Academy. He is also the President of the Tuscaloosa Chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). In addition to his ministerial and activist responsibilities, Pastor Gardner is an academician. He teaches The Black Church, Pulpit in Protest, and Introduction to African American History at the University of Alabama and Church History, Old Testament Survey, Foundations of Biblical Studies, and Christian Doctrine at Selma University.
He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and the Master of Divinity degree from Beeson Divinity School at Samford University, in Birmingham, Alabama, where the Dean and faculty selected him as the Most Distinguished Student. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Christian Preaching and Practical Theology from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Lousiville, KY.
Pastor Gardner heeded the call of God into Christian ministry in 1995 at the First Baptist Church in Gordo, Alabama, under Pastor Frank Kennedy Jr., where he served as the Home Bible Study Leader, Prayer Leader, and Pulpit Associate. Pastor Gardner has also served as a Youth Pastor at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church under the leadership of Frank Kennedy Sr. Prior to being called to become the 8th Pastor at Plum Grove Baptist Church; Pastor Gardner served Plum Grove under Pastor Walter Lane Robinson as the Assistant Pastor for 2 years.
Pastor Gardner is a visionary. The Christ Centered, Biblically informed, and community conscious ministries launched at the Plum Grove Baptist Church under his leadership has lead to healthy and steady spiritual and numerical growth. He has lead the Plum Grove Baptist Church in the construction of a 12,000 square feet, $1.2 million Development and Outreach Center, which houses a number of community and family engaging ministries.
He is an active community leader in the city of Tuscaloosa, and an avid preacher and speaker throughout the Southeastern United States. Pastor Gardner serves on numerous educational, social, religious, and civic boards throughout Tuscaloosa including the University of Alabama’s Center for Community Based Partnership Executive Council, The Tuscaloosa Prayer Network, Unity Tuscaloosa, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Realizing the Dream Committee. His social and community activism warrants him the opportunity to be visible in the community and allows him to be actively engaged in intricate events and the affect they have on our community.
He is married to Shonetay Gardner and they have 4 children, Coretta (Corey), Tristan, Titus, and Tyson and 3 beautiful grandchildren.
